About Murphy

The town of Murphy, North Carolina, can be found in the heart of Cherokee County and is actually the county seat of the area, located in the southern Appalachian Mountains. The beautiful historic district of Murphy has restored buildings dating back from 1839. This quaint rural town is home to approximately 1,625 people. The downtown section of town is beautifully decorated with a landscape of various flowers and trees line the streets. Due to this incredible display of botany, Murphy has been dubbed the City of Flowers. 

Approximately halfway between Atlanta, Georgia, and Knoxville, Tennessee, Murphy is an extremely convenient location near major roads and highways that allow for exploration of the incredible and diverse neighboring cities and towns. Nestled along the famous Great Smoky Mountains, living in Murphy allows residents to enjoy a beautiful small town amidst the big, majestic mountains. Murphy allows a taste of small town life at its very best. 

Things To Do

There’s no shortage of activity and excitement to be found in the heart of beautiful Murphy, North Carolina. Outdoor thrill seekers can take on the whitewater rapids on the Ocoee River or the Nantahala River, zip line along over 600 feet of wire at RidgeRunner Ziplines where the heights reach an exciting 80 feet, or go mountain biking along the Piney Knob Trail. Along with the outdoor excursions, locals and visitors alike can enjoy the various restaurants, breweries, wineries, and patios found throughout the town. These unique establishments offer tours and tastings, one-of-a-kind craft brews, and a variety of delectable foods to sample. 

Outdoor activities are abundant, from hiking and mountain biking to trout and bass fishing. Hiawassee Lake in Murphy is widely considered to be one of the most beautiful in the state. Konahetah Park has a river walk, playground, picnic areas, baseball and a soccer field, tennis courts and a new multi-million dollar swimming pool and gym complex. The Murphy river walk is about a three mile trail that starts at Konahetah Park and follows the Hiawassee River with many picnic areas and barbeque grills along the way.

The town of Murphy has a vibrant art scene. The first Friday of every month from May through December is dedicated to Murphy’s Art Walk. The tour is filled with artistic demonstrations, live musical performances, delicious food provided by local establishments, and plenty of socializing with the locals of Murphy. The various displays are all provided by local arts and visitors even have the option to indulge in the historical and paranormal ghost walk. The entire evening is sponsored by the Cherokee County Arts Council. 

The Cherokee County Historical Museum highlights the rich history of Native Americans and the early pioneer settlers that came to the land. The museum is housed in the historic Carnegie Library building in the thriving downtown core. This intriguing museum features over 2,000 artifacts, 40 exhibit panels with drawings and photographs, antique farm implements, and vintage household items, many of which are hand-crafted. There’s also a stunning collection of over 700 collectable, antique dolls. The museum also provides the start of the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail through the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Brasstown, North Carolina, is a charming, rural neighborhood found approximately 6.4 miles from Murphy. Brasstown can be accessed via State Road 1548, within ten minutes from the town of Murphy. 

Hayesville, North Carolina, is home to a variety of cultural and historical attractions. The town is host to several museums, exhibits, and gardens including the Clay County Museum, which was converted from the historic courthouse and jail, the Cherokee Homestead Exhibit, the Cherokee Botanical Sanctuary, and the Spikebuck Mound. The downtown square is filled with unique dining establishments and exciting entertainment. Residents of Murphy who wish to explore the amenities found in Hayesville can travel approximately 15 miles along US-64 East.  

Warne, North Carolina, is another quaint and charming town in Western North Carolina. This small town is surrounded by wonderful wildlife and natural resources. Visitors to this area can be on the lookout for bear, deer, fox, and elk as well as a wide variety of birds. The surrounding Nantahala National Forest and the Chattahoochee National Forest make a peaceful setting just waiting to be explored. Murphy residents can travel approximately 13 miles along State Road 1548 to indulge in the magnificent wilderness in and around Warne. 

Robbinsville, North Carolina, is the county seat of Graham County. With a population of just 620 people, Robbinsville is the epitome of small-town charm. This quaint little area is located in the foothills of North Carolina’s Great Smoky Mountains, making for gorgeous scenery and excellent hiking trails. Robbinsville is known for the beautiful landscapes, friendly locals, and exciting outdoor adventure. The town is also a popular destination for many movie and television shows.
