The town of Murphy, North Carolina, can be found in the heart of Cherokee County and is actually the county seat of the area, located in the southern Appalachian Mountains. The beautiful historic district of Murphy has restored buildings dating back from 1839. This quaint rural town is home to approximately 1,625 people. The downtown section of town is beautifully decorated with a landscape of various flowers and trees line the streets. Due to this incredible display of botany, Murphy has been dubbed the City of Flowers.
Approximately halfway between Atlanta, Georgia, and Knoxville, Tennessee, Murphy is an extremely convenient location near major roads and highways that allow for exploration of the incredible and diverse neighboring cities and towns. Nestled along the famous Great Smoky Mountains, living in Murphy allows residents to enjoy a beautiful small town amidst the big, majestic mountains. There’s no shortage of activity and excitement to be found in the heart of beautiful Murphy, North Carolina. Konahetah Park has a river walk, playground, picnic areas, baseball and a soccer field, tennis courts and a new multi-million dollar swimming pool and gym complex. The Murphy river walk is about a three mile trail that starts at Konahetah Park and follows the Hiawassee River with many picnic areas and barbeque grills along the way.
The town of Murphy has a vibrant art scene. The first Friday of every month from May through December is dedicated to Murphy’s Art Walk. The tour is filled with artistic demonstrations, live musical performances, delicious food provided by local establishments, and plenty of socializing with the locals of Murphy. The various displays are all provided by local arts and visitors even have the option to indulge in the historical and paranormal ghost walk. The entire evening is sponsored by the Cherokee County Arts Council.
The Cherokee County Historical Museum highlights the rich history of Native Americans and the early pioneer settlers that came to the land. This intriguing museum features over 2,000 artifacts, 40 exhibit panels with drawings and photographs, antique farm implements, and vintage household items, many of which are hand-crafted. There’s also a stunning collection of over 700 collectable, antique dolls. The museum also provides the start of the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail through the Blue Ridge Mountains.
