Young Harris, Georgia is a very small town in Towns County, located in the extreme North Georgia mountains. The city itself is only about one square mile, but it is filled to capacity with beauty and creativity. Former Georgia Governor and U.S. Senator Zell Miller was born and continues to live in Young Harris, and began his political career as mayor of the small town from 1959 to 1960.
Located in the heart of Young Harris is Young Harris College, a four-year institution named after Judge Young Loftin Gerdine Harris. The school is responsible for a large portion of the population, attracting a younger demographic than the neighboring towns of Blairsville or Hiawassee.
Residents of Young Harris can enjoy the mixture of beautiful, natural surroundings and busier downtown core where plenty of interesting and exciting amenities await. The total population of Young Harris is approximately 1,655, which makes the thriving little town one of the most populated of the surrounding rural North Georgia communities.
Young Harris College is most certainly the busiest part of the town and offers some unique and wonderful entertainment. Theatrical arts students of the college offer magnificent performances at the Peacock Playhouse on campus, and these wonderfully amusing productions are always a treat for the community.
