Young Harris, Georgia is a very small town in Towns County, located in the extreme North Georgia mountains. The city itself is only about one square mile, but it is filled to capacity with beauty and creativity. Former Georgia Governor and U.S. Senator Zell Miller was born and continues to live in Young Harris, and began his political career as mayor of the small town from 1959 to 1960.
Young Harris College is most certainly the busiest part of the town and offers some unique and wonderful entertainment. Theatrical arts students of the college offer magnificent performances at the Peacock Playhouse on campus, and these wonderfully amusing productions are always a treat for the community. Also on the beautiful campus is the Rollins Planetarium, which hosts many exciting and educational programs throughout the year, as well as free Friday Night Star Shows.
Much more recently established, the town is also now home to the Brasstown Valley Resort, one of Georgia’s premier resort destinations. The resort boasts a lodge, golf course, spa, and dining facilities. Overseen by Zell Miller, the construction and operation of this spectacular resort is designed to magnify the beauty of the valley in every way. The homes in the “big city” of Young Harris resemble those of Mayberry RFD times, picturesque in both style and setting. Also, gracing the mountainsides and offering the most spectacular views of nothing but nature, are some of the most beautiful and unique custom craftsman homes and quaint cabins available in Georgia.
If the picture perfect small town atmosphere is what you’ve always dreamed of Young Harris, Georgia is calling your name.
